Adult Life Skills
Adult Life Skills (ALS) provides training and assistance in daily living skills, participation in community activities and the development of social skills. This program is to help the persons we serve become more self-sufficient and to increase participation in a variety of life experiences. It also helps to improve or maintain functioning or reduce regression for individuals with very limited personal, social and prevocational skills. ALS offers a non-work option for persons more interested in recreational and leisure activities. Trained staff can assist with personal care including feeding, changing, and bathroom needs. ALS’ goal is two-fold: to successfully provide continued learning opportunities in personal development; and to provide assistance and support as individuals access their community.
a) Personal Development: Individuals are supported in increasing their daily living skills so they can increase their independence in areas of their choice. ALS provides services in the areas of personal care, cooking, cleaning, money management, continued education, and health and wellness. This service also explores various hobbies, offers options for entertainment, laughter, and relaxation, and encourages the development of social skills to foster increased relationships.
b) Community Access: By honoring choices and personal preferences, people begin to actively participate in their community. With encouragement to use natural supports and services as well as giving back to their community through volunteer opportunities, individuals learn about their community and the activities it has to offer.
